Buckeye Commons and College Specific Career Services

Career coaches are available to all students through both your specific college career services offices and Buckeye Commons. Career coaches are available to meet with you in a variety of formats including 1:1 virtual or in-person appointments or 15-minute virtual drop-in appointments for quick questions.

Workshops are also offered on a rotating basis and cover topics such as: Resume Writing, Strategies for Interviewing, Leveraging Handshake and Job Search Strategies and Grad School 101.

Handshake

Handshake is a leading career services platform designed to connect students, career services and employers. With its user-friendly interface and advanced features, Handshake facilitates seamless career development making it an invaluable tool for students throughout their college career and as they navigate the transition from college to the professional world. All currently enrolled students and alumni have access to Handshake via handshake.osu.edu.

  1. Personalized Career Recommendations: Handshake uses advanced algorithms to provide personalized
    career recommendations based on students’ skills, interests and academic achievements.
  2. Job Board: Students can discover internships, on-campus, part-time and full-time job opportunities
    tailored to their profiles. Students can leverage Handshake to explore different career paths and network
    with employers.
  3. Events and Workshops: Stay informed about career-related events, workshops and job fairs happening on
    and off-campus. Handshake ensures students never miss an opportunity to enhance their skills through
    career service workshops and network with potential employers.
  4. Networking: Students can communicate directly with students and employers within the platform,
    through messaging, events and job postings.
  5. Appointments: To provide personalized support, students can make appointments with career services
    staff to receive coaching on their career goals, materials, exploration and post-graduation plans.

Whether you are exploring majors or looking for more information about your chosen field of study, “What Can I Do With This Major?” is a valuable tool designed to help you connect your major and interests to career paths. This resource details the typical industries, career areas, and employers associated with each major and covers strategies aimed at making you a more marketable candidate after graduation. “What Can I Do With This Major?” is a free, virtual resource available to all Ohio State students.

Career and Interests Assessments with FOCUS 2 Career

Among the many tools for exploring your interests, skills, values and personality is FOCUS 2 Career. This resource is free for all Ohio State students to use and offers a variety of self-assessments that can help you determine your academic and professional potential.

Explore GoinGlobal for International Opportunities

GoinGlobal career and employment resources include world-wide job openings, internship listings, industry profiles and country-specific career information. More than 30,000 pages of constantly updated content is included on topics such as: work permit/visa regulations, resume writing guidelines and examples, employment trends, salary ranges, networking groups, cultural/interviewing advice, corporate profiles and worldwide job listings... plus much more!

  • Go to handshake.osu.edu
  • Login using your BuckeyeMail email
  • Once you are logged into Handshake, go to the “Jobs” section

Effective Networking Strategies for Students
Current employees and students enrolled at Ohio State can log into their Workday account to view and apply for positions.

Federal Work-Study Jobs:
Federal Work-Study is a form of federal financial aid that provides specific job opportunities for eligible students to help pay indirect education expenses. Guidance for eligible students can be found on the Student Financial Aid website. Eligible students have a federal work-study offer as part of their financial aid package. Questions regarding eligibility for this program can be directed to sfa-jobs@osu.edu

If you have a specific on-campus job or department in mind, try visiting their website. There is a chance that departments will advertise their open positions online. You can also contact them directly or visit their office in person.
